Automotive Safety Technology refers to a broad umbrella of projects, devices, and special technologies within the automotive world that were developed to ensure the safety and security of automobiles and passengers.
Advanced vehicle safety technologies have the potential to improve safety and reduce the number of automotive related injuries. There are many innovative automotive technologies out there that are helping us work towards this, including emergency braking crash warning systems, adaptive headlights, on-board sensors, GPS, cameras, and more. Emergency braking (also called Dynamic Brake Control and Automatic Emergency Braking) is believed to be the next large advancement in automotive safety technology. In March of 2016, the U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety announced the commitment of 20 automakers (who represent virtually the entire U.S. auto market) to make automatic emergency braking a standard feature on virtually all new cars by 2022.
Automatic emergency braking (AEB) is believed to be the next significant auto-safety advancement and differs from the standard antilock braking systems (ABS) that already is equipped on most modern vehicles. Automatic emergency braking will first alert a driver to take corrective action to avoid a collision, if it senses an impending forward crash. If the driver does not respond in sufficient time to avoid the crash, the automatic emergency braking system may automatically apply the brakes to assist in preventing or reducing the severity of a crash.
